When you think of the blues, real blues, you think of the Delta. Names like Lightnin’ Hopkins, Robert Johnson, Son House… grizzled of men with hands like a pair of ancient snakeskin boots, hardened from a lifetime of trials. That image is about to change.

Heidi Holton is turning heads with her mastery of one of the deep South’s oldest – and often male-dominated – traditions. At once authentic and utterly modern, her fresh take on blues standards are nothing short of a revelation, and her songwriting shines just as brightly. Following in the foot steps of guitar-slingers like Memphis Minnie and Rory Block, Heidi Holton is making a name for herself in the blues community.

Holton began young, leaving western NC to play in rock bands in Athens, GA and New Orleans, LA – but when the blues called, she answered. Strapping an acoustic guitar to the back of her 250cc motorcycle, she headed north to Ohio to study under legendary guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (The Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) at the Fur Peace Ranch. Here, she soaked up guitar licks and quickly became an accomplished finger picker and slide guitar player.

It wasn’t long before people began to take notice. Holton is currently touring throughout the southeast, promoting her full length solo album, Mockingbird Blues. Popular demand keeps her busy, playing about 150 shows a year. She has opened for legendary bluesman Roy Bookbinder and slide guitar master Tommy Talton, and has been invited to play a set the Arts and Minds Festival at the Fur Peace Ranch this July, where Jorma Kaukonen will also be performing.

Heidi Holton is the real deal – her blues chops have come honestly. She is no poser. She is no tourist. And she’s in it for the long haul. Keep your eyes open, Heidi Holton is coming to a venue near you and you don’t want to miss her.
